The "GIS Product and Vendor Analysis" is a 43 page report which analyses each of the following 12 GIS products (in alphabetical order) operating in Australia & New Zealand as reported by contributors to the 2006 GIS / Spatial Survey:

Report Contents:

This analysis is based on the responses from 494 contributors (after QA) to this survey who reported 893 GIS products, averaging 1.8 products per site. The Table of Contents of this Analysis report outlines the content of the report, with 3 to 4 pages per vendor / product containing, for each GIS product:

  • Profile of each Vendor / Product user community with regional distribution and industry distribution
  • Other products used in conjunction with the subject GIS product
  • Contributor Budgets for the user community of that GIS product with splits for hardware, software, mobile hardware and software, maintenance, staff, consulting, training, data capture / conversion, data purchase (ex-imagery) and data purchase - imagery
  • Churn to the subject GIS product for the 10 years covered by the survey churn report and for the last 3 years, covering:
    • previous GIS product and reasons why users changed from previous product to current GIS
    • timelines of churn, regional distribution of churn, industry sector of churn and maturity of user churning to subject product
    • stated reasons (summarised) for moving from previous product to subject product
  • Churn from the subject GIS product for 10 years and the last 3 years:
    • GIS products moved to from the subject GIS product over last 10 years and last 3 years
    • stated reasons (summarised) for moving from subject product to another product
    • industries and regional distribution of users who have moved from subject product in the last 3 years
  • Re-purchase statistics including reasons for not re-purchasing and issues which customers want addressed for that GIS vendor and product.
  • Customer Satisfaction analysis based on 6 criteria, that the subject vendor:
    • offers the complete range of services required
    • has flexible support options / arrangements
    • responds promptly
    • has support staff with appropriate levels of technical product skills
    • has support staff with appropriate levels of knowledge of customer's business / industry
    • is cost effective

The conclusion summarises key factors including:

  • total budget reported by vendor and per site (averaged) with a summary of average "spend" per site by vendor
  • budget splits by vendor compared with averages
  • the percent "to" and "from" product churn by product showing which vendor products are doing well and which appear to be going "out the back door"
  • the ratio of customer end-user staff which are supported by GIS staff - this highlights which GIS products have a low ratio such as 1:3 (ie it takes 1 GIS person to provide effective end-user services to 3 customer staff) and which have a high ratio such as 1:37 (ie, it takes 1 GIS person to provide effective end-user services to 37 customer staff)
  • the re-purchase summary per vendor product
